Finally! — The US Government has come to the conclusion that we need to find alternative sources of energy. It took them awhile! Even George W., the oil loving Texan himself says, “America is addicted to oil.”
Cellulose, a material extracted from plants, could be a good bet. It’s the most abundant naturally occurring molecule on the Earth. Trees, lawn clippings, fall leaves… all of it could be turned into an alternative fuel.

You know…it would be so nice to be able to take leaves off my plant (that are getting ready to fall off anyhow) and send then off for processing. Better yet, stick them in my car somehow and have it do the conversion to fuel for me directly. Although that would mean less visits to the pump so the average joe won’t be getting that solution anytime in the near future… *sigh*
But at least they’re finally taking the search for a new fuel source seriously!! Yay!

I’d love for the US Gov to fund more ethanal production. I live in the Midwest and we have more corn than cows and people to eat it. It would boost out economy here like crazy.

In brazil most cars are powered by alcohol and it much cheaper than gasoline, about 1/2 the price or something like that, we make fuel out of corn, sugar cane etc… Why can’t the US do that?
We have tons of farm land, actually more than enough for the whole country to run on biodiesel.

I love hearing about new bio-fuels.
We are completely addicted to oil. Imagine the chaos we would all experience if our oil supply was cut off – our economy would totally shut down.
So its great to see so many new fuel technologies being explored right now.

Regretfully alcohol (ethanol) takes too much energy to produce to be as viable as it is being promoted. Remove farm subsidy and you used more fuel to raise and gather the corn than it will produce.
Brazil, where sugar cane is native, plentiful and wild, it takes little energy to grow and harvest. Extracting the sugars requires no more than a physical press. That makes ethanol very viable there.
At current, biodiesel is the only bio fuel ready for our current infrastructure and works in current engines with out modification. Regretfully, in the US the auto manufactures have campaigned against diesel engines for the past 30 years and hence not many private cars have diesel power plants.
Biodiesel is a band aid to help us move away from combustion engines. At current technology, electric cars appear to be the best option for mobility. Then the question becomes how to produce clean energy to charge those cars and how to make batteries more green.
Blogs like this keep us all thinking about how we can make change. To change the world, start by changing yourself.
